On spring break, I took my children to the swimming pool. Now there is nothing unusual about taking my children to the swimming pool. I do it at least once a week. Like any parent, I pack up the towels, the bathing suits, a swim diaper, maybe a snack and we head to the pool. This day there was a 4-year-old girl who was interested in playing with our family. My 8-year-old son loved the attention; he smiled at her and she seemed delighted to perform tricks for us, asking if my son could do flips in the water too. We…
A newer, more effective treatment for uterine fibroids is available that doesn’t require surgery. That’s good news for the estimated 26 million women in the U.S. who have fibroids — including the millions of Black women who are disproportionately affected by these benign tumors. Black women in the U.S. are up to three times more likely to develop fibroids than white women. Dr. Elizabeth Stewart, a Mayo Clinic gynecologist and researcher, recently published a review on these approved fibroid medications. They are called oral gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) antagonist combinations. Watch: The Mayo Clinic Minute Journalists: Broadcast-quality video (TRT 1:00) is in the downloads at the…
For Tonja Johnson, 53, the emotional toll of living with vitiligo was once so intense and distressing that she would scrape into her skin with her fingers, a nail file, or whatever she had on hand, in an attempt to remove the depigmented patches on her body. “I hated to go out in public without being covered with clothing and makeup because of the stares, whispers, and pointing,” Johnson tells SELF. “I remember paying for items at my local gas station and the cashier dropping my change on the counter as if I were contagious.”Johnson, who experienced severe depression related…
Ed Sheeran has recently been outspoken about his mental health, including his experience with an eating disorder. In his latest project, the Grammy Award–winning singer-songwriter made another vulnerable confession: At times, his drive to pump out song after song was actually a coping mechanism to deal with the chaos going on in his life.“Anytime in my life where things are going badly, I tend to work more, because it’s a distraction,” Sheeran said in his new four-part Disney+ docuseries, Ed Sheeran: The Sum of It All, which explores the personal struggles that inspired his new music. Behind the scenes of performing and…
Now this is how you fix a drink. Just add one part tequila, one part entrepreneur and one part country star. Mix it up in Texas. And voila, Lone River premium brewed beverages are ready to make their mark on the world of refreshing canned cocktails. Lone River founder Katie Beal Brown and fellow Texan native Miranda Lambert have just announced a multiyear partnership, not just to promote the brand, but to promote the dreams of other small businesses with like-minded women at the helm. “Miranda Lambert is the kind of person who makes me proud to be a Texan.…
Bonnie Raitt was set to kick off her tour later this month, but has been forced to postpone her dates due to a “medical situation.” “Bonnie has a medical situation that requires surgery to address,” her team wrote via a statement. “The doctors say that in order for her to heal properly, they recommend she not perform for a couple of weeks.” Of course, the 73-year-old blues legend received an outpouring of well wishes. Her tour is now set to start in Dublin on June 1. We’re sending Bonnie Raitt all of our positive thoughts for a speedy recovery. The…
Your eating habits can have a significant impact on your body. In some instances, your diet can positively impact your health, like when you eat fiber to aid in digestive regularity and enjoy omega-3-rich fish for its cardiovascular benefits. However, the food and drinks you choose to enjoy can also have negative effects on your body. When choosing the items that make up your regular diet, you likely consider flavor, texture, and ease of preparation, but you should also take into account how it can affect your overall health. And sadly, there are certain eating habits that may be destroying…
Below is an approximation of this video’s audio content. To see any graphs, charts, graphics, images, and quotes to which Dr. Greger may be referring, watch the above video. In my video Benefits of Black Cumin for Weight Loss, a total of 17 randomized controlled trials showed that the simple spice could reduce cholesterol and triglycerides. And the side effects? A weight-loss effect. Saffron is another spice found to be effective for treating a major cause of suffering (depression, in this case) with a side effect of decreased appetite. When put to the test in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial,…
YOU PROBABLY HAVE that one friend who talks about sex a lot and seems to think about it all the time (or maybe you’re that person in your friend group). And, you may think, “He’s obsessed with sex” or “He’s OCD about his sex life.” While sexual obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a real thing, too often, the term OCD is overused, says Patrick McGrath, Ph.D., a licensed clinical psychologist and chief clinical officer at NOCD. “Having OCD focused on the theme of sex is not at all the same as just thinking about sex a lot,” he says. OCD is…
