When the International Sports Hall of Fame inducted Garry Kasparov as part of their Class of 2026 on September 26th, it was more for him than a gold medal and a few minutes at a microphone. In Kasparov’s eyes, this helped answer a question that has been debated for many years: Is chess a sport?

“I also want to thank you for an important contribution that might help end this debate once and for all. Chess is, in fact, a sport.”

Kasparov joked that he may not look like a Mr. Olympia winner such as fellow inductee Dexter Jackson, but there are mental components to sports, competitions, and athletics. And when it comes to the mental game, he can attest that chess may be among the greatest challenges of them all.

“Chess is in many ways the purest expression of the mental focus and fortitude necessary to achieve greatness in just about any other sport.”

Garry Kasparov

Love and Dominance of the Game

Born in Baku (in the former Soviet Union, present-day Azerbaijan) in 1963, Kasparov fell in love with the game early in his childhood, and his parents – who also enjoyed the game –  fueled that passion. His father taught him the rules in the game but tragically died in a car accident when Garry was seven years old. His mother continued to foster his talent by enrolling him in the Baku Young Pioneer Palace chess circle.

By age 10, Kasparov was accepted into an elite chess school run by former world champion Mikhail Botvinnik. Impressed by Kasparov’s memory and ability to calculate deep variations, Botvinnik served as the mentor on young Garry’s journey to becoming a grandmaster.

It was only 12 years later that Kasparov reached the summit of his sport, becoming the 13th World Chess Champion in 1985, and the youngest at the age of 22, by defeating Anatoly Karpov.

“Karpov was still 34 at that time. So, I was quite young,” Kasparov recalled during his induction speech. “It convinced me that I could play a much bigger game.”

Kasparov was not only successful in his sport but extremely dominant. He held the official International Chess Federation (better known by the French acronym, FIDE) World Championship title from 1985 to 1993, and the Classical World Championship title until 2000. He held the world No. 1 ranking from 1984 until his retirement in 2005. His peak FIDE rating of 2851 (achieved in 1999) stood as the highest in chess history for over a decade until Magnus Carlsen surpassed it in 2013.

Kasparov was not only a dominant champion but a pioneer beyond sports. Long before the conversations about AI’s impact on society that we read and hear about today began, Kasparov was taking on supercomputers through his landmark chess matches against IBM’s supercomputer, Deep Blue. Kasparov won the initial six-game matchup in 1996 by a score of 4-2. IBM then upgraded the machine, and Deep Blue won a rematch (3.5 – 2.5) one year later. Aside from the intrigue and attention that the matches garnered, they served Kasparov in a way that was beyond the game itself. It led him to explore more about computer science and how he can make bigger impacts globally.

His Noble Second Act

Kasparov retired from chess in 2005 at the top of his game, but he saw himself playing a bigger role on the world stage. Kasparov began a career in political activism and started speaking out as a critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin. He even attempted to run for President of Russia in 2008 but was forced to withdraw due to restrictions placed by the government that kept him from renting a hall large enough to assemble the legally required number of supporters.

As one of the most prominent dissidents in Russia, Kasparov faced intense government surveillance, physical harassment, and multiple short-term detentions by Russian police during street demonstrations. Facing arrest in Russia in 2013, he relocated and became a citizen of Croatia and as he described it “a citizen of Europe.”

“By 2015, my name had disappeared from Russian sport records,” he reported. Undeterred, Kasparov continued his efforts and even made his way to the United States, which was about more than calling a new country his home.

“So, I came to America and as millions and millions of people on the other side of the Iron Curtain, I viewed America as the beacon of hope.”

Kasparov continued to speak out against Putin and by 2022, the Russian government officially designated Kasparov as a “foreign agent”. Despite that, Kasparov’s efforts to create change continued. From 2011 to 2024, he served as Chairman of the Human Rights Foundation, an international nonprofit focusing on defending human rights in authoritarian regimes worldwide.

In 2017, he founded the Renew Democracy Initiative, an American nonprofit organization aimed at strengthening liberal democracy in the U.S. and around the globe. He continues to coordinate with the Russian anti-war opposition coalition in exile, fiercely opposing Putin’s regime and the invasion of Ukraine.

Giving Back to His Sport

Kasparov remains deeply involved in the chess world. In recent years, his contributions have focused on tournament organization, youth mentorship, variant promotion, and high-profile exhibition matches. He was instrumental in launching the Grand Chess Tour (GCT), a circuit of international tournaments featuring the world’s highest-ranked Grandmasters. He remains an outspoken voice on modern world championship matches and top-tier events, frequently sharing strategic insights on contemporary players.

While no longer on the tournament scene, Kasparov frequently plays in specialized exhibition matches, such as his 2025 clash with Viswanathan Anand and his 2026 match against long-time rival Veselin Topalov. Through the non-profit Kasparov Chess Foundation, which he founded in 2002, Kasparov focuses heavily on chess education and identifying elite young talent, he continues to mentor younger prodigies while also hosting training camps, and spearheads digital platforms and coaching clinics.

“Today, nearly every single American grandmaster, chess grandmaster under the age of 35 has come through the Foundation’s programs.”

In his remarks at the induction ceremony Kasparov congratulated Jackson, Forrest Griffin, Vitomir Maričić, and the Harlem Globetrotters as part of this year’s ISHOF class. He concluded by sharing optimism that his induction will make an impact beyond that day in Las Vegas. He intends to use it as another asset in his quest for change.

“Thank you again for this honor, which will hopefully bring attention to our shared fight to renew and revitalize American democracy and ensure that it’s robust enough to meet the challenges of the new era.”
