“Come on Oppy, let’s go party.”When it was first announced that Greta Gerwig’s Barbie would be released on the same day as Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, it felt like a useful piece of counter-programming: a candy-colored confection of a movie for those who weren’t necessarily drawn to the Interstellar auteur’s lengthy, melodramatic take on the creation of the atom bomb. But as press kicked off for these two seemingly polar opposite pop culture experiences, they converged, and evolved into something greater than the sum of their disparate parts. Thus, like Frankenstein’s creature, Barbenheimer was born.It began simply enough, with a question: not…

Penile bruising can happen after medical procedures in the genital area, such as surgery on the penis, groin, scrotum, or surrounding areas, says Dr. Brahmbhatt. Hernia repairs, vasectomies, incision of infected abscesses and scrotal explorations, which are done to examine painful testicles, are common examples. Penile bruising can extend into the scrotum and vice versa, says Dr. Brahmbhatt. “There is a plane of tissue that connects both,” he says. “If this layer is interrupted, then the bleeding can track from one to the other.”Bruising is also common side effect of intralesional injection therapy, a treatment for Peyronie’s Disease, a condition…

Grip Strength is a consistent biomarker of current wellbeing and a strong predictor of future health outcomes (1). Handgrip strength (HGS) has a substantial correlation with overall strength, upper and lower limb function, bone density, malnutrition, cognitive impairment, depression, sleep problems, diabetes, multimorbidity, chronic diseases, and overall quality of life (2)(3). Having low grip strength is associated with numerous negative health outcomes, such as chronic conditions including hypertension, diabetes, cancer, chronic lung disease, heart disease, stroke, arthritis, and psychiatric problems (4). Low grip strength is defined as having less than 26 kilograms or 57 pounds of force for men and…
Bioprinted Skin Mayo Clinic has developed its first 3D prototype of human skin bioprinted to model inflammatory skin disease. 3D bioprinting is a technology that mixes bioinks with living cells to print natural tissue-like structures in three dimensions. This new technology provides the most human-like skin model for studying inflammatory conditions such as atopic dermatitis — more commonly known as eczema — a chronic inflammatory skin condition that causes dry, itchy and inflamed skin. The 3D bioprinting skin procedure, applications and limitations are described in a review article in Regenerative Biomaterials. “3D bioprinting is a burgeoning field in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine…
People often talk about fast food being unhealthy, but they don’t always discuss the fact that there can be huge variances in the nutritional value of menu items depending on what restaurant you order them from and how they’re prepared. Take fast-food chicken sandwiches, for example. These can be drastically different based on what they’re made with. You can have a deep-fried chicken sandwich with tons of mayo and calorie-heavy oils, while you can also have a leaner grilled chicken sandwich with veggies served on a whole-grain bun. Because fast-food restaurants differ so vastly in how they cook and formulate…

Yvonne Hemsey / GettyIf Barbie were a real person, she’d surely turn heads. She’d be a 5’9, 110-pound woman wearing a double-zero miniskirt. Her size-3 feet would slide into sky-high heels, and she wouldn’t be able to walk upright. She’d also wear a buxom C-cup bra. Ruth Handler, co-founder and one-time president of toy company Mattel and Barbie’s creator, gave her that curvaceous figure on purpose. “Every little girl needed a doll through which to project herself into her dream of her future,” Handler told The New York Times in 1977. “If she was going to do role playing of…
