The second stop on the Diamond League circuit takes athletes to the northern coast of Morocco, in the country’s capital city of Rabat. On Sunday, some of the world’s best will be vying for coveted Diamond League points—and prize money—including American stars like Fred Kerley (100 meters), Yared Nuguse (1,500 meters), and Dalilah Muhammad (400-meter hurdles).

Here’s what you need to know.

What is the Diamond League?

The Diamond League consists of 14 meets in different cities across the world. The circuit attracts the highest level of competition across track and field: At each one-day meet, athletes accrue points based on their finishing position, and at the end of the season, the athletes with the most points are invited to the Diamond League Final. Prize money is awarded to the top eight in each event throughout the year, with the winner taking home $10,000. But in the Diamond League Final, winners receive $30,000 and are crowned Diamond League Champion.

Three Events to Watch

Women’s 400-meter hurdles (2:04 p.m. ET)

The first running event of the day is a hurdles season opener for most of the field. Shamier Little is coming off a PB in the 200 meters last month and was the runner-up in the flat 400 meters at the Doha Diamond League on May 5. Janieve Russell, of Jamaica, should also be in contention, but all eyes will be on two-time Olympic champ Dalilah Muhammad. She’s the second-fastest woman ever in the event (51.58) and will be the heavy favorite.

Men’s 1,500 meters (3:11 p.m. ET)

Jakob Ingebrigtsen has been virtually untouchable in the 1,500 meters the last few years. But as dominant as the 22-year-old Norwegian has been, he’s not the runaway favorite on Sunday. Yared Nuguse had one of the most impressive indoor campaigns ever earlier this year, setting an American record in the 3,000 meters and posting the second-fastest indoor mile of all time (3:47.38) in February. The two will face off in the event for the first time, and it’s likely to come down the final stretch. Nuguse’s teammates from the On Athletics Club—Ollie Hoare and Mario García Romo—will look to spoil the party.

Men’s 100 meters (3:25 p.m. ET)

This one was set to be a clash of the titans before Marcell Jacobs, the reigning Olympic gold medalist in the event, pulled out on Thursday with a “slight lumbosacral problem.” Fred Kerley is now the man to beat. The 2022 world champion in the 100 meters will face stiff competition from fellow American Trayvon Bromell, as well as Kenyan sprinter Ferdinand Omanyala and Jamaican veteran Yohan Blake.
