Sometimes, despite the best efforts and intentions, life throws unexpected challenges your way. If you feel stuck or unsure about the status of your current weight loss journey, know that you are not alone. While feeling stuck is uncomfortable, it often just means it’s time to make some adjustments. Let’s talk about how to tweak your weight loss goals so you can continue moving forward with the same confidence and determination you started with.

1. Learn From What’s Working

It’s natural to fixate on the aspects that aren’t going as planned, especially when they seem to be holding you back. However, it’s equally important to acknowledge what is working well for you. By recognizing your successes, you can gain valuable insights to make adjustments where needed. 

For example, “I do really well during the week, but on weekends, I fall off track.” If this sounds like you, consider mirroring the structure of your weekdays on the weekends. This could involve meal prepping certain meals or setting alarms to allocate time for exercise or meals.

2. Listen to Your Body and Mind

Weight loss is not just about physical changes; it also involves mental and emotional components as well. If you feel drained, overwhelmed, or emotionally exhausted, it’s crucial to listen to your body and mind. Your goals might require more effort than you have to give right now, so consider adjusting them to be more realistic for this season of your life.  

It’s also ok to focus on non-weight loss goals if you need to take a break. Keep up with your healthy habits, and remember that self-care is essential throughout any journey.

3. Look at Plateaus as Opportunities

Plateaus can be frustrating, like really frustrating, but they’re also very common with weight loss. Consider them a not-so-subtle reminder that it’s officially time for you to try something new. Whether it be fine-tuning your habits, tackling the habit you’ve been avoiding, exploring new exercises, or experimenting with different meal plans, sometimes a simple change can reignite the process.

Plateaus remind us that we need variety to maintain good health. Adding variety in the ways you move and the foods you eat can be the key to breaking through stagnation and achieving continued success.

4. Set Realistic and Sustainable Goals

While aiming high is commendable, setting overly ambitious goals can lead to disappointment and burnout. If you continuously fall short of your goal each week, take an honest look at it. Can you decrease the quantity or make it more specific? For example, maybe you’d like to drink 100 oz. of water, each day, but continue falling short. Can you adjust it to 80 oz. of water each day?

Keep adjusting the goal until you reframe it in a way that makes it achievable. The fine line between making steady progress towards a goal and not making enough progress towards it is something only you can truly discern.

5. Seek Professional Guidance

If you feel overwhelmed, seeking professional assistance may be the right next step. A registered dietitian is a nutrition expert who can help you learn all things diet- and nutrition-related. 

While you’ve come a long way on your own, it’s okay to let someone support you moving forward. A dietitian can take a closer look at your current goals, eating habits, and lifestyle and then provide personalized recommendations to help you make meaningful adjustments.

Feeling stuck in your weight loss journey is a common experience, and it’s okay to seek guidance and support when facing unexpected challenges. Embrace this space as an opportunity for growth and make the necessary adjustments to your goals with confidence. By staying open to change and taking proactive steps, you can keep progressing towards a healthier you.
