How many steps can you take in 90 seconds? Take the test to find out.

Walking is easy to overlook because it feels so ordinary. That’s exactly why it works. It fits into a normal day, doesn’t require a gym, and gives you a simple way to build fitness without turning every workout into a production.

A daily step count supports more than calorie burn. More steps can improve your aerobic base, help manage weight, support heart health, and keep your joints moving through a rhythm your body already understands. Research continues to show that higher daily step counts are linked with better health outcomes, including lower risk of all-cause mortality and cardiovascular disease, and benefits can start well below the old 10,000-step target.

The 90-second step test gives you a quick snapshot of how well your walking pace holds up. You’re not sprinting, power walking with wild arm swings, or trying to game the number. The purpose is to walk with intent and count how many steps you can take while staying smooth and controlled.

For this test, 170 steps or more in 90 seconds puts you in the top tier. Below, we’ll cover how to perform the test, what your score means, and how to improve your walking pace with simple, repeatable training.

How to Perform the 90-Second Walking Test

Pick a flat space where you can walk without weaving around furniture or stopping. A hallway, sidewalk, track, or quiet parking lot can work. Set a timer for 90 seconds and count every step. Each time one foot hits the ground, that counts as one step.

How to Do It:

  1. Stand tall at your starting point.
  2. Start your timer and begin walking at a brisk, controlled pace.
  3. Keep your stride natural without overreaching.
  4. Swing your arms comfortably at your sides.
  5. Keep your eyes forward and your posture tall.
  6. Count every foot strike until the timer ends.
  7. Record your total step count.

Movement Standard: Your steps count when you stay in control, keep walking the entire time, and avoid breaking into a jog. The goal is a brisk walk that you could repeat, not an all-out scramble.

Best Variations: Hallway Walk, Track Walk, Sidewalk Walk, Treadmill Walk, Walking-Pad Test.

Use the same route each time you test. Surface, turns, and space can change your score, so consistency gives you the cleanest comparison. A smooth test tells you more than a rushed one.

  • Under 120 steps: Building Your Base

This is a useful starting point. Focus on posture, steady breathing, and finding a walking pace you can control. Short daily walks can help this number climb faster than you might expect.

  • 120 to 145 steps: A Steady Walking Pace

You’re moving with a solid rhythm here. This range shows you can keep moving for the full test and maintain a pace that supports daily activity.

  • 146 to 169 steps: Strong Everyday Fitness

This is a strong score. Your walking pace is brisk, your coordination holds up, and your body can keep moving without losing rhythm.

  • 170+ steps: In Great Shape

Hitting 170 or more steps in 90 seconds shows a strong walking pace. You’re moving with purpose, keeping your stride consistent, and showing the kind of fitness that carries into longer walks and active days.

How to Improve Your 90-Second Step Count

Improving this test doesn’t mean walking harder every single day. Most progress comes from walking more often, adding short bursts of faster pace, and building enough leg strength to keep your stride from fading. The goal is to make brisk walking feel comfortable, then let your step count rise from there.

  • Walk daily when you can: A consistent step habit gives your body regular practice without needing a formal workout.
  • Add short brisk intervals: Pick up your pace for 20 to 30 seconds, then settle back into an easy walk.
  • Use posture as your first cue: Stand tall, keep your eyes forward, and let your arms move naturally.
  • Avoid overstriding: Faster walking usually comes from quicker turnover, not reaching farther with each step.
  • Build leg strength: Step-ups, chair stands, and calf raises can help you feel stronger while walking.
  • Retest every few weeks: Use the same space and the same 90-second standard so you can easily track your progress.

A strong 90-second walking score says your body can move with rhythm, pace, and control. If you can hit 170 or more steps, you’re walking at a level that reflects solid fitness and a strong daily movement base.
