We talk about time like it’s a hallway. The past is the part behind us, the present is the door we’re currently standing in, and the future is a hallway stretching out ahead, waiting to be walked. It’s a useful enough metaphor for a calendar. It’s a fairly bad description of what’s actually happening when you’re alive.

Why “Now” Isn’t Where You Think It Is

In his new book, Now What: You, Your Life, and the Truth You’ve Been Avoiding, Gary John Bishop makes a case that reframes the whole hallway metaphor: now isn’t a point moving through time. Now is a location — the only one you’ve ever actually occupied. Your memories of the past aren’t happening in the past; they’re happening now, as memories. Your hopes about the future aren’t happening in the future; they’re happening now, as hopes. Everything you’ve ever experienced about time has happened in exactly one place, and it’s the place you’re standing in as you read this sentence.

The Trap of “Later”

This matters because so much of how we talk about productivity is built on a quiet promise of “later.” I’ll be confident once I land the promotion. I’ll feel organized once the system is dialed in. And I’ll finally relax once the big project ships. The horizon keeps its distance on purpose — every time you get close, it moves. Now What doesn’t argue that goals or ambition are the problem. It argues that postponing your own sense of confidence, satisfaction, or peace of mind until some future checkpoint is a choice, not a requirement. You can have big goals and still refuse to defer your own wellbeing until they’re met.

Knowledge vs. Knowing

There’s a distinction worth sitting with here too: knowing about something isn’t the same as knowing it. You can read every book on love and never once feel it change you. You can memorize everything there is to know about “the present moment” and still spend your entire day somewhere else. The difference between information and something that actually shifts you isn’t more facts. It’s the willingness to actually pause and let an idea land, rather than filing it away as one more thing you now technically know.

That’s the piece of this that connects most directly to what I teach under TimeCrafting: managing your calendar is a knowledge problem. Being present for your life is not. You can build the most elegant system in the world and still never actually arrive in the one place all of it was meant to serve — right here, right now.
