We’ve been told healing takes time. That it’s nonlinear. That the tears, breakdowns, and self-help spirals are all just part of the process. But what if that narrative isn’t just incomplete—but actively keeping us stuck?

Enter Bizzie Gold, founder of Break Method and the author behind Your Brain Is a Filthy Liar, a sharp and science-backed takedown of everything we’ve been taught about emotional wellness. Gold’s work flips the script on conventional therapy, revealing how self-deception—not trauma itself—is the root cause of chronic struggle. Her approach? Less talk, more rewiring. Think neuroscience, pattern recognition, and early childhood coding used to expose and replace the subconscious loops that keep us locked in self-sabotage.

In this conversation, Bizzie goes deep on the real reason your “healing journey” still feels like an emotional treadmill. She explains how unresolved childhood patterning hijacks our adult behavior, how emotional chaos gets mistaken for authenticity, and why normalization may be the most dangerous word in wellness.

From Healing to Healed: Why You’re Still Stuck (And How to Break Free)

You often say that healing isn’t supposed to be a lifestyle. In your words, why do so many people get stuck in a never-ending “healing loop”? Our culture pitches us an idea of what healing looks like. We are told it’s messy and not a straight line. We are shown what this mess looks like in movies and then we just accept the status quo. There’s only one glaring issue – healing actually can be a straight line and the correct technique doesn’t leave you looping in chaotic breakdowns for years. Normalization is the enemy.  As soon as we believe something is normal, we accept it. We stop pushing back against the system, demanding what should be rightfully ours – a healed and whole state.

Your work with Break Method uses neuroscience and pattern recognition to dismantle emotional loops. Can you walk us through what typically keeps someone unknowingly locked in these subconscious cycles? From a young age our brain learns rules about how to survive. These rules take the pixels that exist in our external world in the form of stimuli – such as smells, facial expressions, voice tone, and behavior – and turn them into language. An awkward turn of lips becomes smile. The sour smell of broccoli becomes dinner. These rules create shortcuts and associations that run in the background, filling in the gaps without us truly observing each detail.

Each time we run the system, we assume more and more without truly being present for the detail. These subconscious rules become our identity and, over the years, instead of learning to separate from these patterns and learn to see objectively, we call it SELF. These subconscious rules distort your entire perception of reality and keep you locked in a set of repetitive behaviors and emotions.

The first step to radical healing is to uncover the Brain Pattern Type and its unique series of self-deceptive patterns. Once this is understood, it’s extensively tested to ensure the correct pattern is being corrected. Imagine going to the eye doctor and they get your prescription wrong – you’d pay for glasses that make you blind. The process of rewiring can be challenging at a variety of moments – different for each pattern type – and typically lasts approximately 20-24 weeks. During this time each of the 9 distinct markers that are tracked in Brain Pattern Mapping are strategically opposed from the level of language – correcting the distortion at the level of perception instead of telling you not to do something you already know not to do. If awareness was enough – you wouldn’t still be stuck.

Many of our readers have tried everything — therapy, journaling, self-help books — yet still feel stuck. What is missing from the traditional healing models that you believe is essential for actually crossing the bridge to lasting wellness? Many methodologies keep people stuck in their narrative without taking the proper steps to separate from and learn how to question their narrative. Over 11 years in this industry, I’ve seen thousands of clients who were convinced that they knew why they were struggling. Plot twist – Brain Pattern Mapping uncovered that it was something else entirely, and they had spent years chasing a red herring that made their pattern ruts grow deeper. Preference also cannot be guiding the trajectory of the healing experience. Clients often want to avoid or justify circumventing the very tools or exercises that help them sustainably heal. The soft, affirmative approach often keeps clients circling the drain, repeating the same behaviors all while becoming more aware. Awareness doesn’t change patterns – strategic and properly timed actions do.

What’s one journaling prompt or mental reframe that never fails to create a shift in your clients? As a methodology, we tend to steer most clients clear of journaling and have actually found journaling to be a source of deepening existing deceptive patterns – and ostensibly making them even worse. We do have weekly exercises that we encourage clients to check in with and one them has clients track what they are consuming: movies, food, music and music lyrics, overhearing conversation topics around the house. Tracking consumption habits alongside a section that helps a client take an account of what language they are hearing in their head can help a person see how much the content they consume, generates intrusive or destructive thoughts. We encourage our clients to look at the connection and identify the faulty message or lie their subconscious is trying to get them to believe.

Why is early childhood programming so critical to understanding — and ultimately breaking — the cycles that keep us stuck in the healing phase? We come into this world extremely malleable – innocent, not yet hardened by the patterns of the world – wanting nothing more than be curious and seek love. Sadly, many children get inputs that antagonize this right away. Each negative stimulus – no matter how small or insignificant – matters deeply. In my work I use the example of an uncarved block of wood. Each negative input carves the block. By age 5, the block has become a sculpture that now goes through the world observing and responding. Many of us are aware of our current age beliefs and understanding but are responding from an age that is typically between 5-8. If we don’t understand the pattern distortion that was generated in the early years, we can’t accurately correct it.

Can you walk us through how unresolved childhood patterning shows up in our romantic conflicts—often without us realizing? Our Brain Pattern impacts the way we perceive reality, and with it, all of our relationships. In fact, many Brain Pattern types react in a more childish or subconscious-driven way when intimate relationships are on the table. Typically, when we perceive that the stakes are higher, we go deeper into the pattern. Our first attempt at loving and being loved in return took place during the early years. The rules we learn about love and relationship typically overlays every input we receive in adulthood and even when we know better or have learned better in a book – we find ourselves repeating the same thing. Learning information in a book or course only commits that to semantic memory which is as helpful as middle school history facts. You have to learn how to strategically rewire with action to change the neural pathways.

Let’s talk about conflict loops. Why do so many couples fall into repetitive arguments that feel impossible to resolve—and what’s one shift that can help break that cycle? Each person has a unique Brain Pattern and when two patterns attract each other – a certain level of opposition tends to exist. In my work, I call this Symbiotic Dysfunction. Two opposite patterns experience spark or attraction because they mutually trigger each other in the right timing and sequence to get their emotional fix. In Break Method, we track 9 distinct markers of which 4 of them help us understand how behavior changes over a period of time.

Many relationships become toxic, in part, due to how these behaviors unfold in opposition to one another. Consider someone with Anxious attachment style attracting someone who is more Avoidant. Like a moth to the flame, people are attracted to the chase or the hope for what they may one day get – only to face the inconvenient truth that both people never seem to want the exact same thing at the same time.

When one part of the relationship does work like Break Method and their paradigm shifts, it’s typically enough to disrupt even the most toxic relationship cycles. It’s not uncommon that I get one side of the partnership. They show up distressed that their counterpart won’t “do the work.” In most cases, the one person doing the right work changes the dynamic so much that the other partner shows up months later ready to jump all the way in. To distill it down – radical personal responsibility. It’s the key to everything. Even if you’re convinced it’s all their fault – you still have to face the way you engage it, trigger it or are attracted to it. If it’s always the other person and you don’t look in the mirror – you won’t heal.

You’ve said before that people mistake ’emotional activity’ for real healing. What are three clear markers that someone has truly broken free from chronic healing loops — not just intellectually, but physiologically and emotionally? When you rewire correctly the first thing you should experience is the ability to observe the old pattern distorting your perception. When you notice it – whether visual or auditory – it will likely make you feel disgusted or unstable. I call this moment reality vertigo. It can feel like you’re dipping your toes off the edge of reality and if you choose to go one more step, you have to question everything. Once you cross that threshold – you have to face the reality of what your actions have caused throughout your life. And ideally, without spiraling into shame. In my work, we offer intentional support during this phase to keep people in momentum. Once you continue on the path and you learn to oppose your patterns and you hold position, it shouldn’t take long for people to look you right in the eyes and say “wow, you’re like a different person.” These 3 signs are all indicative that you’re doing the right work.

You just launched a powerful new book titled Your Brain Is a Filthy Liar. (Love the title, by the way!) Can you give us a sneak peek into what you mean by “self-deception” — and why it’s such a hidden root cause of chronic struggle? At the root, mental illness is caused by self-deception. When people learn to see these patterns and actively oppose them empathy, collaboration and momentum flow with ease. People don’t lead reactive lives. They don’t miss the present cues or nuances because their brain is busy filling in the gaps. Self-deception happens when we perceive reality – something that happens every minute of the waking day.

As you can imagine, if this isn’t addressed, each day becomes a threat to your mental and emotional wellbeing. Self-deception skews our perception and fills in blanks that are not only distorted but in many cases flat out inaccurate. We act as if these things are rules and we justify our own demise. Then we go cry to a therapist about it who will dance around the topice of self-deception altogether. I say that ends now. Our mental health crisis needs to come to a close. We have the tools. We understand the process. We simply need to be willing to question the faulty paradigm we’ve been pitched culturally for the last 200 years.

When someone says, “But this is just who I am,” what’s your response? You’ve spent so many years seeing through the distortion of your Brain Pattern that it does feel like you. The reality is that you are in there somewhere. There is a unique and powerful light that came into this world on mission – ready to boldly pursue your destiny. Then life got in the way. Negative self-talk, bad habits, comparison seep in and next thing you know you’re watching an Instagram influencer live the life you always thought you were meant to live. That’s because your Brain Pattern has been running the show. You ARE in there. You can learn to separate from this destructive cycle and be free but it won’t come from talking circles around your lifestory or trying to spiritually bypass it. Your destiny is calling and it’s on the other side of rewiring.
