There’s a particular kind of arithmetic people do after they miss something. Two weeks off, they think — so that’s two of something owed, two boxes unticked, two zeroes in a column that used to be full. The counting feels rigorous. It’s actually the whole problem, and the difference between consistency vs cadence is what explains why.

What Consistency Actually Asks of You

Consistency is about showing up. It’s the reliable beat of a habit, the box you tick, the streak you preserve, the calendar filled in. Sure, it’s valuable – and it isn’t worth knocking — but it’s mechanical. It’s what a machine does. And mechanical systems have a specific failure mode: if your relationship with your work is built on consistency, then a gap is a failure, full stop. The chain snapped. There’s no interpreting your way out of it, because the whole appeal of a streak is that it doesn’t allow interpretation.

What Cadence Does Instead

Cadence is musical. It breathes, it pauses, it speeds up and slows down, it accounts for tone. Cadence isn’t only when you show up — it’s how, and more importantly why.

Watch what happens in live music when a player misses a note, because it always happens eventually. The thing separating a musician from someone who is merely playing an instrument is entirely what comes next. The musician keeps playing. Not because they didn’t notice — they noticed harder than anyone else in the room — but because the music doesn’t stop for a missed note.

That’s cadence. It also sits very close to grace, which isn’t about perfection but about permission: permission for the off day, the rest, the stumble that comes from dancing rather than marching.

Why the Distinction Between Consistency vs Cadence Decides Everything

Here’s what the counting misses. Nobody experiences a body of work as a count of boxes — not your audience, not your clients, not your family, not you. What they experience is a rhythm. And a rhythm can absorb a rest. That’s literally what rests are for; they’re written into the score.

Apply a consistency frame to something that only makes sense in a cadence frame and you’ll reach for the quantitative every time. Two missed weeks becomes the number two. But two isn’t what anyone felt, including you. What you felt was a story about a debt, and stories about debts are heavier than debts because you can’t pay them off.

Coming Back Is the Part That Breaks

Most people handle stopping perfectly well. They go on vacation, they get sick, life takes priority, they step away — and while they’re away they’re mostly fine. It’s the return that fails, usually because the first day back gets designed as the hardest day: pick the biggest, most overdue, most dread-generating item off the pile and clear it. That’s a re-entry that punishes you for re-entering, and then day two never arrives.

The alternative is to resume one thing, chosen for rhythm rather than for backlog. Those are almost never the same item. The rhythm-establishing thing is small enough to actually finish, recognizably yours, and it makes tomorrow easier instead of harder. The other half — the part most people skip — is deciding out loud what stays down. Not “I’ll get to it when I can,” which is just anxiety in a friendly voice, but this isn’t resuming this week. Because if you don’t name what stays down, everything stays up, humming quietly at you until you avoid re-entry altogether.

None of this requires a new system. It requires a smaller first step and the permission to take it today rather than Monday or September. That’s what productiveness actually looks like — not doing productive, but being productive, at a tempo that can survive an interruption.
