If you’d asked me last week, I probably would have guessed that corner-cutting chefs and contaminated produce were the main causes of foodborne illnesses coming out of US restaurants. But I would have been wrong: According to a new CDC report, the biggest known reason people get sick after eating at food joints is that restaurant workers show up to the job while they’re ill.For the study, researchers analyzed 800 foodborne illness outbreaks reported by 25 state and local health departments between 2017 and 2019. About 500 cases had at least one contributing factor identified, and 205 of those cases (41%) likely involved…

ON APRIL 26, 1986, the Chernobyl Nuclear Reactor in northern Ukraine—then part of the Soviet Union—exploded, sending a massive plume of radiation into the sky. Nearly four decades later, the Chernobyl Power Plant and many parts of the surrounding area remain uninhabited—by humans, at least.Animals of all kinds have thrived in humanity’s absence. Living among radiation-resistant fauna are thousands of feral dogs, many of whom are descendants of pets left behind in the speedy evacuation of the area so many years ago. As the world’s greatest nuclear disaster approaches its 40th anniversary, biologists are now taking a closer look at…
I also made smoothies—a lot of smoothies—and simple, three-ingredient meals, like pasta, cashews, and tomato sauce, or a bagged salad with smoked salmon and toast. I also reframed what “counted” as dinner: It could be anything from the boxed mac and cheese with sautéed spinach on the side to frozen pizza topped with sliced bell peppers. It didn’t have to be something that I prepped from scratch. It didn’t even always have to include a vegetable. While I tried to include a carb, fat, and protein on every plate—something I have been helping my clients do for years—my ultimate goal was simply…
If you have trouble drinking the daily recommended amounts of water each day—which starts at about 91 ounces for women and 125 ounces for men—then adding some flavor to your glass may sound appealing. And that’s basically the gist of a new TikTok nutrition trend, dubbed “watertok”—though some might argue watertok-ers take their flavors to the extreme. As you’ll see in the viral videos, users mix in a sugar-free, low-calorie powder or syrup, featuring flavors like “Skittles original punch,” with ice and water. Some people even create a full water bar (yes, that’s like a liquor bar but with water), featuring…
Ten years after issuing a draft recommendation on how much arsenic should be allowed in apple juice, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) finalized its guidance for the industry last week. On June 1, the government agency announced its limit of 10 parts per billion (ppb) for inorganic arsenic in apple juice. The same limit was first proposed by the FDA back in 2013. “The guidance supports the FDA’s goal to reduce exposure to environmental contaminants from foods commonly consumed by babies and young children,” the FDA wrote in its announcement.
