Mayo Clinic neuroscientists observed the brain’s immune cells called microglia (yellow) shielding neurons (cyan) from inhibitory synapses (magenta), which suppress neural activity under anesthesia, in an attempt to awaken the brain from sedation. According to a Mayo Clinic study published in Nature Neuroscience, the cells that act as the central nervous system’s first line of defense against harm also play a role in helping the brain awaken from anesthesia. This discovery could help pave the way for innovative methods that address post-anesthesia complications. When coming out of anesthesia, more than one-third of patients can experience either extreme drowsiness or hyperactivity,…
Nobody told me it was going to be like this. I remember sitting in my doctor’s office saying those very words as I tried to explain how perimenopause was affecting my life in ways I’d never imagined. The physical symptoms brought on by my fluctuating hormones—hot flashes, trouble sleeping, body aches, and debilitating migraines—were bad enough, but I was totally unprepared for the emotional and mental changes I experienced alongside them. I went from being a fairly happy, well-functioning person to dealing with mood swings and brain fog that left me feeling like someone I didn’t recognize had taken over…

Unfortunately, that’s a common scenario, according to Dr. Mayo. “Pain is usually what causes people to seek care,” she says. “And they often go to the emergency department.” But while ER staff can temporarily solve the problem, the underlying reason often goes undiagnosed—even when people follow up with their primary care doctor. “Many people just aren’t aware that HS exists,” Dr. Mayo says. “And it’s not only patients, but doctors too.”A 2020 study published in Dermatology drives that point home: Among nearly 400 people with HS, the average time from first symptoms to a correct diagnosis was 10 years, and…
