It’s not uncommon to feel lonely or isolated on a weight loss journey.  Because as your habits and routines change, your priorities may shift as well, making room for those newly adopted healthier habits.  While some people in your life may embrace this new version of you, others may need help understanding.  Support is essential to staying motivated and on track with weight loss and this support can come in many different forms.  Here are some tips to help you feel less lonely and more connected during your weight loss journey.

5 Strategies for Staying Connected During Weight Loss

1. Join a Weight Loss Support Group

Many find comfort in knowing others are going through something similar.  A weight loss support group does just that.  It helps build a community to support each other on their weight loss journeys.  Look for groups through social media platforms, your health insurance provider, weight loss medicine clinics at local hospitals, or even health-based apps. You can also join groups on the Lose It! app, and with a user base of millions, there are likely many others who have been where you are now and can be a resource to you if you need it.

2. Find a Workout Buddy

Exercise is a helpful strategy for weight loss and long-term weight maintenance, so why not make it a social experience, too?  Try working out with a friend, coworker, neighbor, or family member to burn calories while building friendships.  If you need to meet a workout buddy, try joining a fitness class, as those in attendance may have similar goals.  A workout buddy can help you stay motivated and accountable.

3. Talk to Your Family and Friends

Some individuals need help understanding how to support a healthier you.  Don’t assume that because it’s your goal, it will be their goal too.  Whether it be a spouse, friend, or family member, sometimes being honest and direct is the key to getting the support you need.  Plus, they may be more willing to help than you initially think.

4. Hire a Health Professional or Wellness Expert

When in doubt, turn to the pros.  A healthcare professional or wellness expert has the skill set to provide reliable support and factual guidance during your weight loss journey.  Do your research before hiring just anyone, as this person has the potential to be very influential on your trajectory.

5. Keep a Journal

If you struggle with stress, depression, or anxiety, adopting a journaling habit can be highly beneficial.  Writing down your thoughts and feelings can be a helpful way to process emotions, stay connected, and increase motivation. Consider starting a weight loss journal to document your progress and reflect on your journey.

Adopting one or more of these strategies can help your weight loss journey go from feeling lonely to connected.  It’s also important to note that the strategies may need to be adjusted depending on where you are on your health journey or life circumstances.  A strong support system can help you stay motivated and feel like yourself, so be intentional about surrounding yourself with people who uplift and encourage you.

Besides finding external support to benefit your weight loss journey, investing in your self-care and self-love is equally important.  Here are four tips for staying true to yourself as your progress on your weight loss journey.

4 Ways to Feel Your Best During Weight Loss

1. Focus on the Positives

Instead of fixating on what you don’t like about your body or food choices, try to focus on the positive changes you’re making. Positive self-talk can go a long way in your overall mental state.  Celebrate your progress and the little victories along the way.

2. Don’t Give Up Your Hobbies And Interests

Losing weight doesn’t mean you have to give up the things you love. While your priorities may shift to make time for meal prep or more activity, continue to pursue hobbies and interests that make you who you are.

3. Dress In Clothes That Make You Feel Confident

Don’t worry too much about the sizing of clothing; instead, invest in clothes that flatter your body type.  Wearing clothes that make you feel good about yourself can help boost your confidence and make you feel more like yourself.

4. Practice Self-Care

Taking care of yourself both physically and mentally is important for maintaining your sense of self. Make time for activities that help you relax and feel good, such as taking a bath, meditating, or reading a book.  Build it into your week; you’ll be glad you did.

Remember that losing weight is a personal journey, and it’s important to do it in a way that feels authentic and true to yourself. Focus on making healthy choices that make you feel good, both inside and out.

The Bottom Line

If you experience loneliness on a weight loss journey, know you’re not alone.  Work on building your external support system through workout buddies or healthcare professionals.  In addition, making a conscious effort to carve out time for self-care can replenish your spirit and keep you feeling motivated on your weight loss journey.
