There’s a particular kind of ambition that shows up every January and every Monday: the decision to change several things at once. New workout, new diet, new reading habit, new sleep schedule, new side project. It feels like seriousness. It’s usually the thing that guarantees none of it lasts.

The Failure Mode Nobody Names

The people who fail at structured challenges mostly aren’t failing for lack of will. They’re failing because they stacked too many at once, and stacking makes each one fragile. Every additional commitment adds a point where an ordinary disrupted week — a sick kid, a work crisis, a trip — can knock the whole structure down. Run one challenge and a bad week costs you one thing. Run five and a bad week costs you the entire architecture, along with the confidence that you’re someone who finishes what they start.

Why “I Forgot” Beats “I Quit”

The second surprise is what failure actually looks like from the inside. It’s rarely a dramatic decision to stop. It’s far more often a task that got moved — rescheduled to a different time for a perfectly good reason — and then quietly fell out of the routine that was holding it. Once it’s out of the rhythm, it isn’t a decision anymore, it’s just absence. You don’t quit. You forget, repeatedly, until forgetting is the new default.

This is why the container matters as much as the commitment. A challenge that lives at a consistent time inside an existing rhythm survives disruption. A challenge that floats — done whenever there’s room — has no rhythm to fall back into once it’s been displaced.

Length Does Something Short Sprints Can’t

There’s also an argument for going longer than feels necessary. A three-week attempt tells you very little; almost any commitment survives three good weeks. Six weeks crosses a month boundary. Seventy-five days crosses seasons, weather changes, travel, at least one bad stretch. That’s not endurance theater — it’s the only way to find out whether something genuinely fits a real life rather than an idealized one.

The Same Activity Isn’t the Same Challenge

The last piece is that a challenge has to be built around a problem you’re actually trying to solve, which means it can’t be evaluated from the outside. Watching a movie every night for thirty days sounds like the opposite of a challenge — until you know the person doing it is a writer mining each film for craft, deliberately protecting time that would otherwise dissolve into scrolling. Same activity, entirely different job. What makes it a challenge isn’t difficulty for its own sake; it’s the deliberateness of choosing it and the discipline of returning to it.

That’s the connective tissue with everything I teach. The point was never to do more things. It’s to choose fewer things on purpose and give them enough room to actually become part of how you live.
