Why Being “Too Much” Is the Secret to Better Relationships & Less Stress

Raise your hand if you’ve ever been told you’re “too much.” Too loud. Too emotional. Too passionate. Too ambitious. Too… you.

For a lot of women, that’s the cue to start shrinking. We tone down our voice, dim our fiery nature, and sand down the sharp, beautiful edges that make us who we are—all in the desperate hope of being accepted. We learn to censor our jokes, hide our big dreams, and put a lid on our feelings because we’re afraid our genuine selves will be rejected.

But here’s the tough-love, liberating truth: the constant effort to make yourself smaller is exhausting … AND it’s also the #1 reason you feel so drained and stuck in less-than-stellar relationships.

Leaning into your authentic self and proudly owning your “too much-ness” is actually your secret weapon. It’s the only way to build the high-quality connections you deserve—and finally dial down your stress for good.

The Problem With Shrinking Yourself

Constantly editing yourself to be more palatable is a one-way ticket to burnout. On top of holding back the real you, you’re expending a massive amount of mental and emotional energy to do so.

Every time you bite your tongue, pretend a joke was funnier than it was, or swallow your true feelings, you’re making a withdrawal from your precious energy reserves.

This creates a quiet, insidious form of stress that lives just beneath the surface, leaving you anxious and unfulfilled—even when you’re surrounded by people.

The truth? You’re essentially in a relationship with a version of you that doesn’t even exist, and the people around you are responding to that fake version. That, my friend, is a recipe for deep loneliness.

Your “Too Much-ness” Is a Relationship Filter

When you stop apologizing for your enthusiasm, passion, or big, sometimes messy feelings, something incredible happens: you start attracting your soulmate relationships.

Friendships

This means finding soul-sisters who don’t just tolerate your wild ideas—they’re the ones who say, “YES! And what if we did this next?!” They cheer for your ambition instead of seeing it as a threat. These friendships go deeper than surface-level chatter because you’re fully seen and understood without judgment.

Partnerships

In love, this means finding a partner who celebrates your quirks and loves you for the person you are—not the person you pretend to be. The right partner will encourage your boldest dreams and never ask you to shrink for their comfort. (Bonus: they’ll match your weird.)

Communities

In your larger community, it means surrounding yourself with people who get it. Whether it’s your workout group, book club, or an online space, you’ll find circles where your ideas are met with curiosity and excitement, not polite nods and quick subject changes.

When you show up as your full, unapologetic self, you’re sending a clear signal: This is who I am. Take it or leave it. And the people who take it? They’re your people. The ones who leave? They were never meant for you anyway—and you just saved yourself a ton of wasted time and energy.

Why Owning Your Authentic Self Reduces Stress

Embracing your “too much-ness” is also one of the most powerful forms of self-care. It’s a direct path to less stress and more peace.

When you’re no longer policing every word you say or emotion you feel, you free up massive amounts of mental bandwidth.

  • Instead of agonizing over whether you should send your friend that nerdy article you loved—you just send it, and they get excited too.

  • Instead of hiding your big business idea—you share it, and suddenly the right connection appears.

  • Instead of swallowing your frustration in a relationship—you communicate your needs, and your partner rises to meet you.

This is what living authentically feels like. It’s radical self-trust—and it not only strengthens your relationships, it strengthens your relationship with yourself.

Stop Shrinking, Start Thriving

Being “too much” is not a flaw—it’s proof that you have a powerful light to share with the world. Hiding it only creates more stress and loneliness.

Your unique blend of enthusiasm, empathy, and ambition is the very thing that will attract your people.

So stop shrinking. Start shining. And watch both your relationships and your peace of mind flourish.

What’s one part of yourself you’ve been holding back that you’re ready to finally share with the world? – Alex
