ROCHESTER, Minn. — Hundreds of healthcare professionals will gather Aug. 10-12 for Mayo Clinic’s third annual RISE for Equity: Reflect, Inspire, Strengthen & Empower 2023 conference, an opportunity to advance national discussion and learn evidence-based practices to improving diversity, equity and inclusion in healthcare.

Keynote presentations by leading experts and panel discussions will cover topics such as health disparities, digital equity, artificial intelligence (AI) and coded bias, representation, and organizational belonging, among many others.

The event offers 22.5 hours of continuing medical education with options to attend in person at the Hyatt Regency Minneapolis or virtually, and registration is open. The course is designed for professionals interested in advancing health equity and diversity and inclusion in healthcare, including healthcare providers, social workers, nurses, hiring managers, human resources professionals, supervisors, hospital leadership and administration, healthcare educators, and diversity and inclusion practitioners.

“By utilizing the RISE framework my colleagues and I developed at Mayo Clinic — Reflect, Inspire, Strengthen, Empower — we are creating an environment primed to identify existing gaps and empower each other to break down the barriers,” says Anjali Bhagra, M.D., professor of medicine and chief medical director of the Mayo Clinic Office of Equity, Inclusion and Diversity. “Last year, more than 400 attendees joined us and showcased recommendations. This year, we are excited to welcome even more colleagues focused on sharing invaluable insights that promote diversity and inclusion in the workplace.”

Among the most pressing questions speakers will discuss include:

  • What data-driven and digital tools exist to advance belonging.
  • The ways AI can create a more equitable future in healthcare.
  • How negotiation impacts representation and pay equity.
  • How social entrepreneurship fits into creating more inclusive professional communities.

A poster session during the course also will highlight the latest efforts by institutions around the world to shape policy, create diversity, and promote equity and inclusion in different settings.

“Prioritizing diversity, equity and inclusion in organizational culture is essential to attract and develop the workforce that will shape the future of healthcare into one that optimizes patient care and advances health equity for all people,” says Barbara Jordan, administrator of Mayo Clinic’s Office of Equity, Inclusion and Diversity.
