Qualifying for the Mr. Olympia is supposed to be simple: Win a qualifying pro show and you’re in. Finish in the top three at the previous year’s Olympia and you’re invited back. And, of course, if you’ve already won the Mr. Olympia, you’re qualified for life. Simple enough. But now that we have not one, not two, not three, but four Mr. Olympias competing in the same show, those rules start running into each other. And that has created some confusion.

So, let me explain.

When Qualification Rules Collide

The 2025 Mr. Olympia provides a perfect example of when rules collide. Derek Lunsford won the show, Hadi Choopan finished second and Andrew Jacked finished third. Under the Olympia Qualification System, the top three finishers are automatically qualified for the following year’s Olympia. Except Derek didn’t need to qualify. Neither did Hadi, who unfortunately, already announced he won’t be participating in this year’s Olympia due to visa issues. Both men are former Mr. Olympia champions and therefore already possess lifetime eligibility. Derek’s first Olympia victory came in 2023, while Hadi won the title in 2022. Their 2025 top-three finishes technically qualify them for 2026, but in practical terms those two qualification spots accomplish nothing.

So, what happens to them? Nothing. They don’t roll down.

This is where people get confused. You might reasonably assume that because Derek and Hadi were already qualified, their top-three qualification positions would pass down to fourth and fifth place. They don’t. Fourth place doesn’t become a qualifier because first place didn’t need his qualification. The rule says top three, not three qualification spots. Consequently, the only man who actually gained a new 2026 Olympia qualification from the 2025 top three was Andrew Jacked.

The situation gets even stranger when you look one position farther down. Samson Dauda finished fourth. Ordinarily, fourth place would leave an athlete needing to qualify again. But Samson doesn’t need to because he won the 2024 Mr. Olympia. Like Derek and Hadi, he’s qualified for life. Then comes fifth-place finisher Martin Fitzwater. He’s never won the Olympia and didn’t finish in the top three, so there was no automatic invitation waiting for him. Despite finishing behind four men who were either already qualified for life or automatically qualified, Fitzwater still had to earn his way back to the 2026 Olympia through the regular qualification system.

Why the Spots Don’t Roll Down

It sounds peculiar until you consider the alternative. If qualification spots rolled downward whenever an already-qualified athlete occupied one, theoretically the qualification could keep cascading through the Olympia lineup. A top-three rule could effectively become top four, top five or even deeper depending on who finished where.

Instead, the line is absolute. Top three qualify. Olympia champions qualify for life. Everyone else earns another trip.

It’s one of those small details in bodybuilding that rarely matters—until the right group of guys finishes in the right order. Then suddenly the difference between “the top three qualify” and “three athletes qualify” becomes a very big difference indeed.
