Romanticize Your Life: My Secret to Getting Sh*t Done With More Joy

You know those days where you know exactly what you need to do – go to the gym, prep your meals, do the laundry, answer the emails – but your brain just says “nope, not gonna happen”?

Not because you don’t care about those things. Not because you’re lazy. But because it all just feels so … heavy. Overwhelming. Boring.

And, even though it’s the first thing most of us reach for, the solution isn’t just downing another cup of coffee hoping for liquid self-discipline while whispering “no excuses” to yourself.

The problem is that most of us are trying to perpetually force productivity in an environment that doesn’t feel safe, pleasurable, or regulated. So our brains rebel. They throw up resistance roadblock after roadblock. Everything turns into a fight with your toddler brain. It sucks.

The Solution: Romanticize Your Life

For the last year or so, I’ve been playing with a practice I call Romanticizing Your Life—and no, it’s not just about aesthetic lattes, getting your nails done weekly, traveling to exotic locations, or pretending your life is a Netflix Romcom.

Nah, it’s way more practical and accessible than that.

It’s actually a brilliant blend of simple sensory engagement, nervous system regulation, and mindset work that helps you get sh*t done with greater pleasure, ease, and intention.

Whether you’re a fitness lover, stay at home mom, or a high-achiever trying to make your goals feel lighter and more sustainable, this simple practice will change how you show up to tackle all the things on your to-do list.

Time to connect to your senses. 👂👁️👃👅🖐️

Here’s how to do it:

SCENT: Anchor Yourself With a Signature Smell

Smell is one of the fastest ways to shift your emotional state. It bypasses logic and hits your limbic system—the part of your brain tied to memory, emotion, and mood.

  • Light a candle before you sit down to journal or plan your week.
  • Keep a grounding essential oil (like lavender, eucalyptus, or sandalwood) at your desk or in your gym bag.

When you pair scent with a specific task, your brain starts to associate that smell with safety, intention, and energy. Your body will feel safer in its environment to get the task done.

SOUND: Create an Emotional Soundtrack

If you were the star of your own movie (which you are), what music would be playing during your training montage? Or your focus scene?

  • Use binaural beats or instrumental music to ease into deep work mode.
  • Try gentle rain or forest sounds for slow, reflective tasks like stretching or journaling.
  • Pump up the jams with feel good music for workouts.

BONUS TIP: Literally create a playlist called “Romanticize Your Life”. I have one, and it’s on repeat daily. You can even create a different playlist for each task/mood. I’ve got folk music for work hours and gangsta rap for workouts. It’s called VERSATILITY, okay?!

Music shifts your state. If you want to show up more consistently? Give your brain a sound it wants to follow and boosts the vibe you want to feel.

SIGHT: Curate the Scene

When your environment looks good, you feel good — and when you feel good, you get more done. Make your space more inviting and welcoming.

  • Open the blinds. Let natural light flood in.
  • Tidy up the space where you’ll be working or moving your body.
  • Use your favorite mug for your coffee.
  • Keep your favorite stuffed animal/blanket/photo nearby and look at it intermittently and connect to the joy you feel when looking at it.

Make your environment feel beautiful to you. When your space reflects the energy you want to bring, your nervous system softens. You stop resisting and you start leaning in. And you can visually anchor to the things that bring you joy in your space.

TOUCH: Regulate Through Texture

Physical sensations ground you in the present moment. And the more present you feel, the less likely you are to disassociate or procrastinate.

  • Use a fuzzy blanket while doing an annoying admin task.
  • Sit on a yoga mat instead of a stiff chair while working on your laptop.
  • Put on some of the warm, fresh-out-of-the-dryer clothes when you have to fold the mountain of laundry.

Touch brings you into your body — and a regulated body is a focused, capable body. Don’t underestimate how much a comfy hoodie or fuzzy socks can change your day.

TASTE: Add Flavor to Your Focus

Taste is deeply tied to dopamine and reward — so give yourself something delicious and intentional while you work.

  • Sip a “main character beverage” while doing a task you’d normally dread—think lemon water in a wine glass, a greens drink in a mason jar, or protein coffee with fancy ice cubes and a couple swirls of caramel drizzle.
  • Keep a properly-portioned bowl of healthy snacks nearby to fuel while you work.

When your brain links productivity with tiny pleasures, it starts craving the process — not just the outcome.

Let’s Make Each Day a Little More Romantic

Your nervous system isn’t wired for punishment — it’s wired for safety, pleasure, and rhythm. When you layer in sensory rituals, you give your brain a reason to feel good while being productive. And when productivity feels good? You’ll actually do the things you’ve been avoiding.

Romanticizing your life is about intentionally creating moments that feel so damn good, your brain stops resisting and starts engaging. It’s about creating the safety and self-connection that your body desperately craves. It’s a nervous system-friendly way to bring presence, joy, and focus into your daily tasks—especially the ones that normally feel like a chore.

What would your main-character-self wear, drink, and listen to while getting shit done?! – Alex
