Style
Just like regular underwear, period panties come in various styles. So if you think of your favorite style of undergarment—boyshorts, thongs, high-rise, cheeky—chances are that type will be your fave period underwear as well. “The style of period panties you choose will ultimately be up to your personal preference and needs,” Dr. Shepherd says. “You’ll want to look for something that provides enough coverage and absorbency for your menstrual cycle, and is comfortable to your liking.”
Absorbency
Dr. Shepherd notes that most period underwear will hold the same amount as a tampon, so they might not suit your heavier days. “If someone has a heavier flow, they may need to change the underwear more often or stick to other feminine products,” she explains. “I’d typically recommend period underwear for those with lighter periods or for the last few days of your menstrual cycle to avoid leaks or accidents.”
Some companies make ultra-absorbent panties, but most types are for light to moderate days. If you bleed more, you’ll also want to look for period underwear that provides full coverage with a waistband-to-waistband gusset to prevent leakage.
Use types
“Period underwear are pretty versatile and can be useful for more than menstruation,” Dr. Shepherd says. If you live with incontinence, period panties can also be useful during leaks and serve as a temporary solution.
If you’re worried about your nighttime flow, most period underwear comes with extra coverage while you’re sleeping. That way you can go to bed with peace of mind that there won’t be any leaks and wake up to clean sheets.
“There are also plenty available that are a fit for an active lifestyle, so you can go for a run, cycling, or any physical activity while wearing them and not worry,” Dr. Shepherd adds.
